Ich mache gerade den Jazz-Einführungskurs auf EdX mit. Wir sind erst in Woche 4 von insgesamt 10, aber ich kann ja mal hier reinschreiben, was uns bisher empfohlen wurde.
Für den Kurs wurden "all-time greats" definiert, und zwar: "Louis Armstrong, trumpet from Early Jazz; Duke Ellington, pianist/composer from the Swing era; Charlie Parker, known as Bird, alto saxophonist from the Bebop era; Miles Davis, trumpeter who influenced four styles of jazz; and John Coltrane, tenor saxophonist from the Modal/Free era"
Es wurden für den Anfang des Kurses fünf wichtige Stücke als "theme songs" bestimmter Stilrichtungen definiert: 1) "Moanin'" - Art Blakey - Hard Bop; 2) "Song For My Father" - Horace Silver - Hard Bop; 3) "Take Five" - Dave Brubeck - Cool Jazz; 4) "Shaw 'Nuff" - Dizzy Gillespie/Charlie Parker - Bebop; 5) "One O'Clock Jump" (1956) - Count Basie - Swing
Hard Bop

- Horace Silver, piano/composer - Stücke: The Preacher, Sister Sadie, Blowin' The Blues Away, Song For My Father, Nica's Dream, Room 608, Strollin'
- Miles Davis, trumpet, and his 1950s quintet - Alben: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', Steamin'; Stücke: Trane's Blues, If I Were a Bell

- Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophone - Alben: Saxophone Colossus; Stücke: Pent Up House, St. Thomas
"There are a lot of other great players that were associated with Hard Bop, and I'm sorry we can't include them. A few of them that you might wish to investigate, if you like this era, are Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone: Sonny Stitt, who played the alto and the tenor saxophones; the trumpeters Kenny Dorham and Fats Navarro; the trombonist, Curtis Fuller; and finally the organist Jimmy Smith."
Cool Jazz
- Chet Baker - Alben: She Was Too Good To Me, Chet Baker in Tokyo, My Favorite Songs: The Last Great Concert; Stücke: Walkin' Shoes, But Not For Me, You're Driving Me Crazy, My Funny Valentine
- Dave Brubeck - Alben: Time Out; Stücke: Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five, Three To Get Ready
- Miles Davis - Alben: Birth of the Cool; Stücke: Boplicity, Summertime
- Gerry Mulligan - Alben: Two of a Mind (mit Paul Desmond); Stücke: Walkin' Shoes, All the Things You Are
- Stan Getz (Bossa Nova) - Alben: Jazz Samba, Getz/Gilberto, Stan Getz with the Oscar Peterson Trio; Stücke: Girl From Ipanema, So Danco Samba
"As was the case with the Hard Bop era, there are other artists to investigate that we didn't have time to look at in this course. You might want to listen to the Modern Jazz Quartet, which featured the vibraphone-- that's kind of an unusual instrument in jazz; the pianist Lennie Tristano, who had his own take on Cool Jazz; and Lee Konitz, the alto saxophonist."
Bebop
- Parker/Gillespie - Stücke: Shaw 'Nuff, Salt Peanuts
- Charlie Parker, alto saxophone - Stücke: A Night in Tunisia, Ornithology, Scrapple From The Apple, Parker's Mood, Now's the Time, Confirmation
- Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet - Stücke: Manteca, Things To Come, The Champ, Ool-Ya-Koo
More players to investigate: Bud Powell, Max Roach, Barry Harris
Swing
- Benny Goodman, clarinet - Stücke: Stealin' Apples, Sing Sing Sing
- Count Basie, pianist/bandleader - Stücke: Lester Leaps In, One O'Clock Jump, Blues in Hoss' Flat
- Vocalists that worked with Count Basie: Billie Holiday (You Can't Take That Away From Me, Strange Fruit), Joe Williams (Everyday I Have the Blues), Ella Fitzgerald (Honeysuckle Rose), Frank Sinatra (Fly Me to the Moon)
- Duke Ellington, pianist/composer - kommt erst nächste Woche ;)
