:dizzy: ;-)

Marriner, Demus set to dazzle

ANOTHER two elderly musicians will cooperate with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at Shanghai Symphony Hall this weekend, right after the 87-year-old Leon Fleisher staged his recital days ago.

Neville Marriner, the 91-year-old conductor, and Jorg Demus, the 88-year-old pianist, will team up for the first time on stage to present Mozart’s 35th Symphony in D Major, the 12th Piano Concerto in A Major and the 40th Symphony in G Minor.

Demus concerts invariably have lots of Mozart’s works. Though some musicians tend to add additional colors to the original works, Demus insists Mozart’s original work is sensational enough if it can be correctly interpreted by the musicians.

Marriner always shows great respect to Demus’ interpretation during rehearsals and at performances.

“The soloist always knows the piece so well and is sure about how he or she wants it to be presented,” says Marriner. “My job essentially is to help the orchestra work with the soloist in presenting his or her idea. I do not change the soloist, though I would set requirements to the orchestra.”

Both the musicians believe that loving what they do and keep practicing is a major factor that keeps them in the good status even at such an advanced age.

“If one day, I sit in the chair and fall asleep, that will be the end of my career,” says Demus.
